True disciples of Jesus Christ find that there is greater peace in their lives even amidst the great challenges they may face. Many have experienced the promise extended by Jesus Christ over 2000 years ago.
For the first 20 years of my life I had scarcely felt peace. One experience I can recall is a Christmas tradition I formed as a young boy.
Every Christmas with my Mom (After my parents separated), we would decorate the tree together and when all was perfect, I would add the very last piece - a little sleeping angel. I would save it for the very last and specifically place it just beneath a light so that it would look glorified. I would then shut off all the lights in the house and just sit there and stare at this little angel for hours. It was the only time in the entire year that I would truly feel at peace.
When I experienced the light of Christ in my life for what seemed like the first time, I had that same feeling I had when I spent two hours with my little angel. When I prayed to know if Jesus was true - that Jesus Christ suffered, died, and was resurrected for me, I felt that same peace. After receiving Him in my heart and accepting Him as my Savior, I again felt that peace and with more power.
I have felt it during some of my greatest challenges and disappointments and I continue to feel it as I strive to live as He lived.
Many individuals feel that commandments are restrictions and a way for church leaders to control us or exercise authority over us, yet my experience is quite the contrary,
In my experience, following God's commandments has set me free from the grasp of the evil one. While God wants to bless us with joy and peace, Satan wants just as badly to destroy that peace. I've come to learn that when I follow God's commandments I am more able to feel His love and that peace promised by the savior. I am happier and am more able to contribute to others. I feel a desire to serve others and show that love that is so freely given to me to others. And because of this, I have a strong desire to share what I know with others, that they too may enjoy these wonderful gifts.
I have had many experiences that confirm to me that there is in fact a God and that He loves and cares deeply for every one of us. He is our Father and we are His literal children. He wants what's best for us and has provided us with a set of commandments that set us free from the grasp of sin. When we sin, we become the prisoners of sin and only through Jesus Christ can we be freed from the burdens that result from our mistakes.
That peace that Jesus promises to all those who will follow Him is best obtained by staying true to Him by keeping His commandments. Jesus said; "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15)
Jesus, through His suffering, death and resurrection, has provided a way for us to feel at peace in a troubled world and that peace comes when we repent of our sins (turn our hearts and will to God) and keep His commandments.
From my experience (which is the only experience I can be sure of), I have been happiest and at peace only when I have followed God's commandments set for me as a roadmap to my happiness in this life and in the world to come. Of this I testify, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
